There are many fashion icons whose words of wisdom regarding how we choose to style ourselves are cemented in history as fashion laws. Among these icons, one reigns supreme…CoCo Chanel.
“Before you leave the house, look in the mirror & remove one accessory.”
Michael B. Jordan is one of two things, unaware of his disrespect to CoCo, or likes to challenge norms others won’t. Maybe the B in Michael B. Jordan stands for “badass”? Either way, unfortunately, Jordan made a huge fashion flop by over-accessorizing at the 2019 SAG Awards. But before we jump into that, let’s cut him some slack by looking at some of his previously bold & well coordinated outfits.
Here, we see MBJ opt for a white base layer, going with a perfectly matched white bow tie, creating a faux air-tie illusion & finishes strong with navy suede oxfords for texture appeal. I give this look 9/10.
Daaaaamn Michael, back at it again with the bold looks! Jordan chose to go modern & understated for last year’s Met Gala theme: “Heavenly Bodies: Fashion & the Catholic Imagination”. While others mostly took an over-the-top approach, MBJ wore a slim-fit pinstriped suit, adorned with a small crystallized cross brooch, a garment sash & an obnoxious highlighter orange OFF-WHITE sleeve label. I give this look 6/10.
I love a good all-black ensemble, being that it’s my favorite color, it’s undeniably the coolest color & The Black Panther premiere is a perfectly appropriate event to do so at. This event saw MBJ wear black on black, with small pops of color in accessories, such as the collar tips & the loafer medallions. What’s really daring here is the choice to button the bottom button on this suit. In men’s fashion that’s a huge no-no, but i’d be lying if I said he didn’t look good regardless. I give this look 8/10.
Finally, we arrive at the scene of the crash…
Ugh. Michael…what?! There’s so much to unpack here…The suit could be fitted a bit slimmer & taken in to accentuate the hips a bit more & he opts to button the bottom button AGAIN, enough already! He’s also sporting not one, but two pinky rings, who does that? Lastly, the goddamn harness. Poor Michael! Who’s doing was this, yours, a stylist, WHO!? This is terrible, not the accessory itself, but the assembly of the overall outfit. Someone whould’ve caught this. The way this could’ve went better is with the harness being a subtle accessory under the jacket, giving it the shine it deserves, being that it’s obviously a statement/flex piece & forget the jacket altogether, or taking the advice of CoCo Chanel, looking in the mirror, seeing it’s too much, taking it off & saving the accessory for another time. Do better Michael, do better! This outfit gets a 2/10 from me.
To end on a positive note & cleanse your visual pallet of the fashion wreckage above, have a look at Timothee Chalamet who wore a different rendition of the same harness at this year’s Golden Globes.
Everything was assembled flawlessly here; simplistic black base layers, gorgeous leather Chelsea boots, understated Cartier accessories & a complimentary sequined Virgil Abloh for Louis Vuitton harness. FYI the following outfit is how you score a 10/10 in my book.
